On May 12, AID FOR AIDS International’s New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) hosted its first nutritional workshop for members of its MSM (men who have sex with men) support group. The 90-minute workshop, “Eating Well with HIV/AIDS,” was conducted by Esther Trepal, a nutrition specialist with God’s Love We Deliver, which provides healthy home-delivered meals to PLWHA throughout the New York metro area.
“Ms. Trepal presented a wealth of specific information about the relationship of diet to HIV,” notes David Mosquera, the NYIAL outreach worker who organized the workshop. “For example, she addressed the connection between HIV and conditions like hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) and lipodystrophy (the redistribution of body fat), and how good nutrition can help control these side effects of HIV medication. The clients asked a lot of questions and seemed to get a lot out of it.”
So much, in fact, that NYIAL plans to bring Ms. Trepal back to conduct another nutrition workshop, with an even more ambitious agenda. “It’s going to be a hands-on experience,” explains Mosquera. “She’s going to bring along some pots and pans, and show us how to cook up some healthy and delicious meals right on the spot.”
Details on the time and place of the next workshop will be announced.
