On Monday, December 1st, 2008, AID FOR AIDS International held is My Hero Gala, commemorating World AIDS Day and celebrating individuals making a difference in the fight against the epidemic. This year’s honorees were photographer Mario Testino, for his work combating stigma and discrimination faced by women and children in developing countries; the SABMiller company, for their unrelenting dedication to the fight against AIDS in the workplace; the law firm of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLC, for their commitment to providing pro-bono legal services to charitable and civic organizations; and Argentinean activist Alejandro Pompei, for his leadership and presence within the new generation of youth born with HIV.
At the event, guests including Lily Donaldson, Sonia Braga, Fabiola Beracasa, Tonne Goodman, Narciso Rodriguez, Jan Olsen, Amy Sacco, and Margherita Missioni bid on donated works of art in a silent auction and participated in a live auction, raising money for children living with HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the end, the event was a resounding success, raising over $420,000 in ticket sales and auctions.
AID FOR AIDS International is a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS in developing countries and who are new immigrants to the United States by providing access to medication, health education, HIV prevention strategies, and advocacy.
