It was a hectic, but thoroughly rewarding week in Panama for 2011 Miss Universe Ximena Navarette, who toured the country from March 14-18 carrying a powerful message of HIV prevention.
Ximena, who received training from AFAI as part of the Miss Universe global HIV prevention platform, was accompanied on her journey by Dr. Jaime Valencia, AFAI’s operations director, and Rita Vanus of AFA Panama. During her week-long stay, Ximena joined a group of Panamanian business executives at an HIV workshop, at which they were urged to engage more fully in the fight against the epidemic.

Ximena also spent a day with adolescents from the “Cuanto Sabes?” program, touring the Panama Canal and listening to the students speak about their experiences in the program, their lives and their dreams for the future. Topping off that tour was a surprise lunch with Miss Universe, which pleased the students no end.
Finally, Ximena took time to meet with fellow beauty pageant winners, including Miss Panama 2010, Miss Panama 2011 and Miss Carnival. Ximena encouraged them to join her in becoming actively involved in “Cuanto Sabes?” and in the overall fight against HIV/AIDS.
