This past Thursday, April 4, the winner of Miss Universe 2012, Olivia Culpo, returned the AFA headquarters in New York for the second time to complete her training as the AID FOR AIDS Ambassador of HIV Prevention.

After taking part in a daylong training titled, “Life Skills for Effective HIV Prevention,” and listening to the personal stories of beneficiaries of our programs, now Ms. Culpo is ready to go out as the international spokesperson of AID FOR AIDS and deliver our life-saving message to thousands of young people across the world.

This interactive workshop focused on HIV prevention and education for youth, covering a range of topics including: learning to love and value yourself; decision making skills; strategies for effective communication; and ways to use the neurolinguistic programming model to deliver the message of HIV prevention.

“For us, HIV prevention means more than just handing out condoms. Prevention starts with knowing yourself in order to love and value your body. When we start to convince young people that they are important, we can begin to create a culture of effective prevention,” said Lupe Aguais, the Director of Education, Training, and Capacity Building.

A special thanks to Olivia Culpo and the Miss Universe team for continuing to help spread our message far and wide! Together with the support of Miss Universe, we are making an impact to transform the culture, bringing us closer to the goal of an AIDS-free generation.

Founded in 1996, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) is a non-profit organization committed to empowering communities at risk for HIV and the population at large, by developing their abilities and capacities in comprehensive prevention through access to treatment, advocacy, education, and training to improve their quality of life and reduce stigma and discrimination. The organization also runs the largest redistribution program of HIV medication in the world through which they recover unused, unexpired life-saving medication that otherwise would be wasted and re-distribute it to those without access to medicine in the developing world.

About Miss Universe
The Miss Universe Organization has been a strong supporter of AID FOR AIDS for the past three years. As part of AFAI’s HIV prevention tours in Latin America and the Caribbean, Miss Universe 2009, Stefania Fernandez, traveled with the AFAI team to the Dominican Republic promoting AIDS awareness. Similarly, Miss Universe 2010, Ximena Navarrete, spent her trips to Panama and Dominican Republic speaking to young people about HIV prevention. Olivia will follow in their footsteps by spreading AFAI’s mission and becoming an instrumental part of our global outreach effort.
