AID FOR AIDS International Announces 2012 My Hero Gala Honorees

to Receive My Hero Award

NEW YORK (October 15, 2012) – AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) is delighted to announce the 11th annual My Hero Gala will be held November 8, 2012, at Three Sixty° in New York City. This highly anticipated event is the pinnacle of AFAI’s fundraising year and an opportunity to meaningfully recognize those who have made a significant contribution to the fight to end the HIV epidemic.

This year’s honorees include:
Candy Pratts Price, for her unwavering efforts to raise awareness of the crucial need for AIDS-related research and to fight prejudice associated with this global affliction, especially among Latinos.
Dr. Bruce Walker, for his leadership in conducting pioneer research to develop an AIDS vaccine. Dr. Walker directs the Ragon Institute of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University.
Community, A Walgreens Pharmacy for its active involvement in the response to the HIV epidemic and, more specifically, for its longstanding support over the years to AID FOR AIDS’ HIV Medicine Recycling Program and outreach efforts to expand HIV testing.

“The My Hero Gala gives us the chance to celebrate those who have taken a stand to help end the epidemic. This year’s heroes are truly an inspiration to us all,” said AFAI Founder and Executive Director Jesus Aguais. “Since the founding of our organization, we have grown from a simple idea into the largest redistribution program of HIV medication in the world. The work we are able to accomplish today is only made possible by the support of committed individuals like our amazing honorees for this year’s Gala.”

Past My Hero award recipients include Robert Duffy and Alexis Cespedes Duffy, Mario Testino, Linda Evangelista, William A. Haseltine, Narciso Rodriguez, Gael García Bernal and Lina Moreno de Uribe.

Chaired by AFAI board members Maria Eugenia Maury, Graciela Dauhajre and Alexis Cespedes Duffy, the 2012 My Hero Gala will be held at Three Sixty°, 10 Desbrosses Street. Founded in 1996, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) works to improve the quality of life of people with HIV or AIDS in developing countries, as well as immigrants in the US. They are also committed to fighting against stigma and discrimination and to stopping the spread of HIV.

AFAI provides access to treatment, education, HIV prevention strategies, and tools for advocacy.
