Seizing on a unique opportunity to spread the message of HIV prevention, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) officials, joined by 2009 Miss Universe and our HIV Prevention Ambassador, Stefania Fernandez, visited Dominican Republic for what became our third HIV Prevention tour in the country.

The tour was partly sponsored by the Dominican Republic Fashion Week, who were anxious to put forth the idea that fashion, in its truest sense, extends beyond clothes, makeup and hairdo. As such, the opening night included a segment to showcase a video in support of our Dominican office (watch video) and Fashion Designer Giannina Azar dedicated a portion of her show to benefit the organization.

“It’s the idea that underscores all our partnerships within the fashion industry,” says AFA director of operations Jaime Valencia, who, along with Ms. Fernandez and AFA executive director Jesus Aguais, made the rounds of the country’s different stops of the tour. “It’s a simple concept – real beauty requires intelligence, caring and compassion.”

Some of the highlights of the trip include: our visit to the Children’s Hospital in Santiago de las Caballeros and media appearances on several TV shows and interviews for major newspapers.

“We received an enthusiastic response from the media,” continued Dr. Valencia. “Of course, having Stefania with us certainly helped create that excitement.”

After her reign as Miss Universe 2009 ended, Stefania’s commitment to her role as AFA’s Ambassador of HIV Prevention and her passion to the cause continue unabated.
