On Thursday, November 8, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) hosted the 11th Annual My Hero Gala. In spite of all of the recent challenges posed to New York City and the East Coast from Hurricane Sandy, this year’s Gala was bigger and better than ever! It was successful as both a fundraiser for the organization and a celebration of all who have taken a stand in the fight against the global HIV and AIDS epidemic. As the pinnacle and culmination of AFAI’s fundraising year, the support we receive from the Gala helps us to continue providing life-saving services to people with HIV in the U.S. and across the developing world.
This year we were joined by so many special guests and supporters, including fashion icons, world-renown scientists, artists, celebrities, philanthropists, and activists working to end the global HIV epidemic. This year’s honorees included Candy Pratts Price, editor of Vogue.com and longtime AIDS activist; Dr. Bruce Walker, leading AIDS vaccine researcher; and Community, A Walgreen’s Pharmacy. The event also generated a substantial amount of press coverage, helping to spread greater public awareness of AFAI and our life-saving mission. Without a doubt, all of the attendees came away from the Gala inspired by the work of our organization and with a renewed sense of hope and generosity.
In total, there were almost 350 people in attendance, raising nearly $450,000 in crucial funds that will support AFAI’s programs in many ways, whether it is sending recycled HIV medication to those without access in the developing world, supporting education and prevention for teenagers in Latin America, or providing crucial services to immigrants with HIV in New York City.
Once again, thank you to everyone in the AID FOR AIDS family for making the Gala a night to remember. Check out pictures from the Gala here!
