The 2011 My Hero Gala, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the gala and the 15th anniversary of AID FOR AIDS International, came off exactly as advertised: a great night for AFAI and for everyone in attendance.
More than 350 members of the AID FOR AIDS family came together on November 8 to celebrate the courage to make a difference and to honor an esteemed group of individuals who have made tremendous contributions to the battle against HIV and AIDS.

We would be deeply remiss in not recognizing the organizations and individuals who made this wonderful night possible. Specifically, our warmest thanks go to Marc Jacobs International, the main sponsor of the gala, and to a committed group of corporate supporters, including Air Europa, Banco Popular, Blues by KYKY, Hermes Corporativo, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
We also express our deepest gratitude to the three event co-chairs and AFAI board members – Maria Eugenia Maury Arria, Graciela Dauhajre and Maria Jose Hidalgo – for their tireless efforts to bring the gala to fruition. And to our Art Committee, Joel Yoss, Beatriz de la Mora, and Carlos Motta.

We further acknowledge once again the achievements of our five My Hero honorees: Patricia Perez, the president of the International Community for Women with HIV/AIDS, whose award was presented by AFAI founder and executive director Jesus Aguais; Miguel Bose, the artist and AIDS activist (award presented by Maria Jose Hidalgo); former Colombia First Lady Lina Moreno de Uribe (presented by board member Alejandro Santo Domingo); and Marc Jacobs president Robert Duffy and his husband, Alex Cespedes (presented by actress Wynona Ryder).
And, finally, AID FOR AIDS thanks all the people, too numerous to single out by name, who attended and supported My Hero – the 60 artists who donated works to the auction, the band that provided the music and dancing, and the members of our staff who worked behind the scenes to ensure the gala’s success.
“On a night like this,” concluded Jesus Aguais, “you feel glad to be alive and privileged to be surrounded by so many great people.”
