On Sunday, May 18, 45,000 caring individuals raised an incredible $7.06 million at AIDS Walk New York.  Once again, almost perfect weather heralded the start of the day with Team AID FOR AIDS setting off early and represented by a slightly smaller team than usual- 74 dedicated walkers and some very welcome last minute friends.  For those of you who didnt attend, participating in the AIDS Walk is always a lot of fun – good friends coming together around a great cause, combined with a beautiful walk through NY’s magestic Central Park.
In the weeks building up to the walk, AFAI team members collected a total of $56,483, and because we are one of GMHC’s 45 community partners, AID FOR AIDS International receives 75% of the money raised (25% is kept by the event organizers – to contribute to the costs of staging such a massive event). $45,000 was the final figure recieved by AFAI.

Team captain and AFAI Creative Director Ian Jopson was again one of the event’s high rollers – Ian raised $22,416 placing him as the 6th highest fundraiser out of the 45,000 participants. Ian is our ‘import’ from Australia and has raised over $95,000 for AFAI since his first AIDS WALK in 2004.

But Ian was not the only big fundraiser, both Michael Pennock and David Roth with $10,100 and $5,500 respectively finished among the Top 100 fundraisers for 2008. Three additional walkers – Beatriz DeLaMora, Randy Simmons and George Fesser achieved Gold walker status (over $2500).  Tobey Busch, Urban Karlsson, Abena Amoah and Isabella Villanueva all reached Star Walker status by raising over $1000. Congratulations and thank you to all of you who helped to raise much need funds that will help to support our programs.

AFAI would like to thank everyone else who contributed to the day, including those who walked to show solidarity and support for the organization.  AIDS Walk 2008 was a wonderful success and we hope to see everyone again next year!
