We wanted to crow just a bit so we could give particularly well-deserved special recognition to Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Latino Fraternity Inc.(LSU) for its consistent and unsolicited support to AID FOR AIDS.  That group became our partner a few years back and has since maintained an ongoing collaboration with us in many ways. This is something that makes us particularly proud. The group, composed of Latino students driven by a common mission, has chosen AID FOR AIDS as its organization of choice. Whether it’s donations as a result of the fraternity’s fundraising events, their energizing participation with us at every AIDS WALK in New York or teams of volunteers that have been deployed in support of our activities, LSU has been beside us every step of the way – and it hasn‘t gone unnoticed. AID FOR AIDS has also acted as advisor and supporter of that group’s “Live Safe” campaign,…

I always knew I was different. It’s hard to put your finger on something as complex as transsexualism when you’re young, but I knew something was off. I remember my first day of school. I was 3 years old. My lunch bag was pink and I remember wearing this long blue skirt. I had never seen so many kids together. All of the sudden a bell rang and all the kids started forming lines. There were two of them and despite the fact that I was not dressed like the rest of the boys, I knew that was my line (thought my mother had made a mistake with the uniform). So I stood on the boys’ line and a teacher grabbed my left arm and pulled me to the girls’ line. I thought she had made a mistake so I switched back to the boys’ line and the teacher switched…

New York City!! Coming right on the heels of a successful AIDS Walk 2012 is the June 24th Gay Pride Parade 2012 and AID FOR AIDS is going to have a resounding presence again.  The 42nd annual procession commemorating the anniversary of the mad-as-hell-and-we’re-not-gonna-take-it-anymore Stonewall uprising, has gained speed and momentum over the course of the years and AID FOR AIDS, since our inception, has been there to make a statement in support of equal rights – not only in New York, but all over the world. With so many crucial issues coming before us, now is the time to show how strong we are in our resolve to live in a world in which are all treated equally. So many of us were born into a world of gay consciousness, we can’t even imagine the before-Stonewall existence. There’s strength in numbers and we need you to be with us…

The day couldn’t have been more glorious as witnessed by the large crowd which turned out to walk with us on Sunday, May 20th for AIDS Walk 2012.  The sun was shining, the temperature was perfect and the sky was clear – all good signals that we were to have a successful AIDS WALK this year. More than 150 people gathered with AID FOR AIDS in Central Park to do the 10-kilometer walk around the Park. The AID FOR AIDS family was filled with great energy and one of the most sizeable crowds among all the teams at the event.  And, thanks to the cooperation from the weather gods we managed to reach the finish line, tired but proud of the work that we, as a team managed to do in terms of raising awareness about our cause and the almost $23K in funds we raised this year prior to…

THE AID FOR AIDS FAMILY JOINS IN CELEBRATING OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

While it is ordinarily considered “bad form” to toot your own horn, we MUST.  Our very own Founding Director, Jesus Aguais, will be receiving the prestigious Dennis de Leon Voz de Compromiso (Voice of Commitment) Award from the Latino Commission on AIDS on May 18th at its annual fundraising gala, Cielo Latino. The award honors the selflessness and commitment of persons living with HIV/AIDS who, through example, have dedicated themselves to enlighten the public about it. We couldn’t be more proud nor is there a person more deserving.  From its humble beginnings as a simple, yet life-saving, medication Recycling Program to its multi-faceted hemispheric program delivery today, Jesus has masterfully guided this ship since it set sail in 1996.  Jesus began the organization with the basic observation of useful and safe AIDS medicine going to waste because someone’s prescription had changed or it had been over-ordered.  He began by squirreling…

Sharing Life in Honduras

“Juan has a long history of opportunistic infections so the severe recurrence of immunodeficiency disorders in his case is to be expected.  However, it is noteworthy that when Juan has been very sick, his response to treatment has been favorable. This must be due, at least in part, to his zest for life and we believe we must help to him to survive.” AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) received this note from Juan’s doctor, a pediatric infectologist in Honduras, as part of an application for entrance into our Access Treatment Program. The AFAI team immediately considered Juan’s case by reviewing his medical history (viral load tests, CD4 count and hematology) and some time later he became one of the thousands of beneficiaries of our program, receiving month by month, the antiretroviral therapy to help him continue his life. Born in 1996, Juan was diagnosed with HIV by the age of…

HIV Testing, A Key Priority In Hiv Prevention At AFAI

HIV Testing, A Key Priority In Hiv Prevention At AFAI

Among the many essential and valuable services offered by AFAI in New York, free and confidential HIV testing ranks among our top priorities in the area of HIV prevention. Beginning 3 years ago with the rapid testing program in our offices, AFAI has been able to find a wide range of organizational partners to exponentially expand this service by taking it off site on a regular basis. What’s the secret sauce? The urgency of our team and its call to immediate action: “Now is the Time to Know!” After getting certified by the New York State Dept. of Health to offer rapid and confidential testing, our office opened its door for anybody who wanted to get tested.  Whether by appointment or walk-in, everybody is welcomed. However, our team understood we needed to go the extra mile and bring HIV testing out to the community. AID FOR AIDS has, for years,…
