Recently, a group of men gathered at AID FOR AIDS headquarters to explore, and express, their individual identities. The forum for this self-examination was a handicraft workshop sponsored by AFAI’s New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL).  The workshop participants were asked to create collages of photos or other images that answered the eternal question, “Who am I?” “It was very instructive,” said NYIAL case manager Jonathan Capote, who led the workshop along with outreach coordinator David Mosquera. “We laid out a huge amount of magazines, newspapers and other printed materials in our conference room and challenged the clients to come up with something that truly defined their personalities. It was great watching them put the pieces of their lives together on paper.” The act of creation, however, was just the first part of the exercise. Once they had completed their collages, the clients were asked to present them to the…

Eduardo Guzman – The Man Behind The Message

Eduardo Guzman – The Man Behind The Message

“I guess one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in life is how powerful information can be,” says Eduardo Guzman, a native of Mexico who joined AID FOR AIDS in 2009. “Information and how you deliver it is a key to everything we do. We have a million stories here that need to be told. My job is to make sure they are told to the right people in the right words.” Eduardo, whose official title is Programs and Development Manager, is, in fact, a sort of one-man nerve center of the organization. Up to this writing, he has operated mostly in the background, feverishly working the phones, hatching innovative promotional ideas in his office cubicle, and juggling a half-dozen or more projects at a time. As multi-taskers go, Eduardo is a grandmaster. “For any organization to succeed, you need people behind the scenes who can handle lots of…

AID FOR AIDS International’s AIDS Treatment Access Program (ATAP) is responding to an urgent request from a major charitable organization in Nigeria for 213 bottles of antiretroviral medication. The request comes from the Faith Alive Foundation, which operates a hospital offering daily inpatient and outpatient treatment to 500 people living with HIV or AIDS. In addition, the foundation runs a number of satellite health clinics throughout the Nigerian countryside.  The bulk medicine shipment, valued at more than $116,000, is the second large order filled by ATAP within the past six weeks. In early October, ATAP shipped 50 bottles of ARV medication to Ibis HIVOS, a Global Fund recipient in Bolivia. “We’ve worked with Faith Alive for some time, but this is the largest shipment we’ve been asked to send to Nigeria,” says Eduardo Hernandez, coordinator of ATAP.  “We’re very pleased to help meet the growing need for ARV therapy in…

The 2011 My Hero Gala, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the gala and the 15th anniversary of AID FOR AIDS International, came off exactly as advertised: a great night for AFAI and for everyone in attendance. More than 350 members of the AID FOR AIDS family came together on November 8 to celebrate the courage to make a difference and to honor an esteemed group of individuals who have made tremendous contributions to the battle against HIV and AIDS. We would be deeply remiss in not recognizing the organizations and individuals who made this wonderful night possible. Specifically, our warmest thanks go to Marc Jacobs International, the main sponsor of the gala, and to a committed group of corporate supporters, including Air Europa, Banco Popular, Blues by KYKY, Hermes Corporativo, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America. We also express our deepest gratitude to the three event co-chairs and…
