When Moises Gonzalez was in his last year in high school in 2005, his knowledge on HIV was only minimal. It was thanks to his decision to do social work and reach out to AID FOR AIDS iVenezuela that he had the opportunity to experience something that would change his life. “My first thought when I contacted AID FOR AIDS was that I was going to have to deal with patients who were about to die, and I would have to work in a mask,” recalls Moises, with a slightly sheepish grin. “I knew almost nothing about HIV, but pretty soon I came to realize that the reality of the disease is very different than the myth. I saw that people living with HIV, if they lead a healthy lifestyle and adhere to their medications, can lead lives like everybody else. That really opened my eyes.” From his days as…

AID FOR AIDS is responding to a request from Ibis-HIVOS, the principal recipient of a Global Fund grant in Bolivia, for a bulk shipment of Kaletra (200/50mg) to meet its clients’ demand for that life-saving antiretroviral medication. For AFAI’s Treatment Access Program (ATAP), which provides medicine to individuals with HIV or AIDS in the developing world, a bulk shipment to a large organization represents a significant change in the normal scope of operations, according to program coordinator Eduardo Hernandez. “In this case, we’re glad to be able to provide a shipment of 50 bottles,” said Hernandez. “A request of this magnitude is further evidence of the tremendous need for ARV therapy that still exists in Latin America.” ATAP, since its inception in 1996, has redistributed nearly $80 million worth of free medication, collected in the U.S., to people with HIV or AIDS in more than 40 developing countries.

In an extraordinary meeting of the Panamanian Coalition on September 15, Catherine Quintero, a member of our AID FOR AIDS Panama team, received, in a democratic process, the support of most organizations in this alliance to serve as youth representative for this Mesoamerican entity. In her new role, Catherine will be working to promote the rights of youth to comprehensive sexuality education and adequate health services, which will decrease the impact of HIV in the region. Catherine has been working as a “multiplying agent” in HIV prevention since she graduated from AFAI’s program, “How Much Do You Know About HIV And AIDS?” in 2007, and she has been an active AID FOR AIDS Panama youth leader. Now, as she embarks…
