AID FOR AIDS’ Cuanto Sabes? preventive HIV education program, which trains hundreds of thousands of adolescents across Latin America and the Caribbean as peer educators in the fight against HIV transmission,  is undergoing a major expansion in the Dominican Republic. On a weeklong visit to the country earlier this month, a team from AFAI’s offices in New York and Venezuela, conducted a series of trainings for new “Cuanto Sabes?” facilitators and teachers, as well as two new members of the board of directors of our Dominican affiliate. “Cuanto Sabes? has been operating successfully in Dominican Republic since 2006,” noted Dr. Jaime Valencia, AFAI director of operations, who led the training effort. “But, as a result of this latest effort, we will now be able to expand the program to reach thousands of additional students throughout the country, and improve the quality of the teaching itself.” The first two days of…

Goodbye, Michael

Goodbye, Michael

While it is admittedly a small sample, the quality of this summer’s crop of AID FOR AIDS interns gives us reason to believe that America’s colleges and universities can still turn out highly-educated, gifted and dedicated young professionals. Last week, we reluctantly said goodbye to our last 2011 intern, Michael Zingman, who will be returning to his pre-med studies at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. We want to thank Michael for making a very substantial contribution to our organization in a very short time. During his stay at AFAI, Michael brought his knowledge and skills in the area of social media and database management to bear upon our medication recycling program and fundraising activities. Like his fellow interns, Michael immediately fit right into our organizational culture, shifting smoothly among various projects and pitching in wherever, and whenever, he was needed. “Michael doesn’t make a lot of noise or go out…

At age 14, very few youngsters have even begun to figure out who they are, let alone establish their professional career paths. But Carlos Pavel Smith, at age 14, was already volunteering with the Youth Leadership Movement Foundation in Panama, and setting his sights on a lifetime of service to his community. Now 27 years old and coordinator of the “Cuanto Sabes?”  HIV preventive education program at AID FOR AIDS Panama, Carlos calls upon his own youthful experiences to inculcate that same spirit of commitment and service in thousands of Panamanian teenagers. To date, he has been enormously successful in that regard. “The small bets we make in our work with young people yield enormous fruit,” he explains. “For example, when we train 15 or 20 youth to become peer HIV educators and ask them to do 100 aftershocks (peer interventions), and they end up doing 500…that kind of dedication…

This has been a year of great accomplishments at AID FOR AIDS International, and we would like to share with you one of those accomplishments, of which we are most proud: the contribution that our office in Venezuela has made toward the prevention of HIV in that country. “Cuanto Sabes?” (How much do you know about HIV and AIDS?) is a primary HIV preventive education program that was created and first executed in Venezuela in 2004. Since then, the program has expanded into a number of other Latin American and Caribbean countries, including Panama, Peru, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia and Ecuador. “Cuanto Sabes?,” which trains high school students to become peer HIV educators, promotes a culture of individual responsibility and healthy sexuality among adolescents. The program currently reaches more than 600,000 adolescents in the LAC region, through the support of organizations such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which…
