Gay Pride day in New York City this year will go down as one of the greatest days in the history of the gay rights movement, following the passage of the Marriage Equality Act only 36 hours before.  Oh, and by the way, the parade itself was fantastic. We would like to thank all the members of the AID FOR AIDS family who marched with us on this historic and beautiful day; the talented d.j. and dancers on our float who provided the music and pulsating rhythms;  and Bioscrip, the AFAI partner that sponsored our participation in the parade. This was AFAI’s return to Gay Pride after 3 years away, and we couldn’t have picked a better time to come back. “The whole day was amazing,” raved Jonathan Capote, a case manager with AFAI’s New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) program, who was marching in his first Gay Pride Parade.…

The growing need for HIV preventive education aimed at adolescents is highlighted in a new survey of 7 Peruvian high schools conducted by youth “Multiplying Agents” graduated from AID FOR AIDS International’s “Cuanto Sabes de VIH y Sida” in Peru. The study analyzed the quality and quantity of information about HIV and AIDS that is provided to public school teenagers and found major gaps, both in the information itself and the training of health educators. “We wanted to get a handle on how the nation is coping with the spread of HIV among young people,” explained Enrique Chavez, director of AFAI’s Advocacy Department. “What we found from the response of our survey sample was that while there is more openness and willingness to address the problem, there are still many segments in society that show a lot of resistance to necessary changes.” Chavez says what is most needed is the…

On June 1, 2011, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) launched a campaign supported by Air Europa Airlines to build awareness of AFAI’s flagship medication recycling program and work in Latin America and the Caribbean. Featured on every Air Europa flight, the year-long “LEAVING A FOOTPRINT, For A World Without A Trace of HIV” campaign will air a video-spot and publish an onboard magazine ad encouraging passengers to “leave a footprint” in the global fight against the HIV epidemic by donating to AFAI. The campaign shows the testimony of a 7 year-old girl who was born HIV-free thanks to the medication AFAI collects in the United States through its Recycling Program and re-distributes through its Access to Treatment Program. To watch the video and read more click Here AFAI collects unused and unexpired antiretroviral medication in the U.S. and redistributes it, free of charge, to individuals living with HIV or AIDS…

Peruvian women, especially those living outside the capital city of Lima, are receiving inadequate sexual and reproductive health care, according to a new study by AID FOR AIDS’ Observatorio Mujer VIH y Sida.  The problem is significantly magnified, notes the study, when reproductive health care intersects with the treatment of HIV and AIDS. The “Study on the Quality of Attention for Women in Peru’s Healthcare System” was based on questionnaires filled out by women found in clinics throughout Peru during their wait time at the waiting room prior to their appointments at the healthcare facilities. The study, encompassing Lima and 12 other local Peruvian observatories, found the overall level of women’s healthcare in the country to be poor. The lack of sexual and reproductive freedom for women is a major contributor to that situation, notes AFAI director of advocacy Enrique Chavez. “In most rural areas, for example, condoms are not…

New Study Highlights Low Participation Of Women In Global Fund Process

A recently-published, original study conducted by AID FOR AIDS International’s Observatorio Latino (OL) forum has found that women in Latin America with a huge stake in the activities of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS are being shut out of the decision-making process. The sweeping study, which covered 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, found that transgender, women living with HIV/AIDS, and female sex workers continue to have little or no voice in how their individual countries use the grant monies allocated by the Global Fund. “There are many reasons for the lack of participation of women in the Global Fund process,” observes Enrique Chavez, director of AFAI’s Advocacy Department. “There is the severe stigma attached to being a sex worker or a transgender person, the overall inequality in many Latin societies between men and women, and the fact that women, as a group, have not yet been…

It is almost gay pride in NYC and AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) is ready to join the 2011 Gay Pride Parade on June 26th!! This event is a great opportunity to bring our message about HIV prevention, access to treatment and political action to one of the communities most affected by the HIV epidemic. It also represents a great opportunity for AFAI to promote its Recycling Program, which continues helping people living with HIV or AIDS without access to life-saving treatment around the world. This year, AFAI is pleased to welcome our long-time partner Bioscrip as the sponsor of our participation. With their support, our float is ready to stroll down the streets of New York accompanied by members of the AFAI family. We have also prepared a special t-shirt and special items for those walking with us. We invite all our friends and supporters to celebrate our return…
