Narciso Rodriguez, the world-renowned fashion designer, has had a long involvement with AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI), culminating in his joining our Board of Directors in 2008.  In a broader sense, his work with AFAI is part of a decades-long commitment to the battle against HIV/AIDS and to other charitable causes close to his heart. With AIDS WALK 2011 just around the corner, AID FOR AIDS spoke with Narciso about his role in the AFAI family and his thoughts about the long struggle to end the HIV epidemic. Q:  You’ve been involved for a long time with pediatric AIDS charities, breast cancer awareness and research, and a host of other causes. What specifically brought you to us? A: I believe it was about five years ago when some friends first told me about AID FOR AIDS. The story was just amazing, and incredibly inspiring. Here’s a man, Jesus Aguais, who…

We are now less than a month away from one of the most important events of the year. We have seen a consistent increase in donations to our AIDS WALK team and we expect that amount to continue rising as we approach May 15. However, we need your help to make this happen and surpass our 2011 fundraising goal. Help us spread the word about the importance of these funds in enabling AFAI to accomplish its mission. As you may know, most of the money raised by our team through this event benefits AID FOR AIDS International. This year, we are dedicating AIDS WALK funds to an expansion of our Recycling Program, which is an integral piece of the AIDS Treatment Access Program. ATAP has benefitted thousands of people living with HIV or AIDS in 35 developing countries. The beneficiaries of this program are individuals who, due to a wide…

As demand for social services in New York is increasing and safety nets are eroding, AID FOR AIDS International is stepping up to fill that gap. Through its New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) program, AFAI is offering free legal services to immigrants living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA) in the New York metropolitan area. The legal clinics, held at AFAI’s Manhattan headquarters on the first Tuesday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m., are staffed by two attorneys from the Legal Aid Society. The attorneys conduct individual consultations with clients, offering advice on a range of legal issues relevant to the immigrant community .The specific topics covered in these sessions generally include requests for legal asylum, eviction, domestic violence, travel document requirements, and permanent residence/green card petitions. The attorneys also provide advice on applications, legal letters, and other documents. NYIAL workers say the demand for legal help among…

It was a hectic, but thoroughly rewarding week in Panama for 2011 Miss Universe Ximena Navarette, who toured the country from March 14-18 carrying a powerful message of HIV prevention. Ximena, who received training from AFAI as part of the Miss Universe global HIV prevention platform, was accompanied on her journey by Dr. Jaime Valencia, AFAI’s operations director, and Rita Vanus of AFA Panama. During her week-long stay, Ximena joined a group of Panamanian business executives at an HIV workshop, at which they were urged to engage more fully in the fight against the epidemic. Ximena also spent a day with adolescents from the “Cuanto Sabes?” program, touring the Panama Canal and listening to the students speak about their experiences in the program, their lives and their dreams for the future. Topping off that tour was a surprise lunch with Miss Universe, which pleased the students no end. Finally, Ximena…

For the second straight year, AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) is pleased to welcome Lambda Sigma Upsilon, the national Latino fraternity, as our AIDS Walk partner.  All AIDS Walk 2011 funds raised by Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Latino Fraternity Inc. (LSU) will be donated to AFAI. Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Latino Fraternity Inc., founded in 1979 by 20 Latino students concerned with the lack of support for minorities on college and university campuses, has grown to 57 chapters across the country. Among its many community service initiatives is the “Live Safe” campaign, which emphasizes the importance of HIV testing at a time when as many as one in five people living with HIV do not know their status (www.lsu79.org). This latest AFAI-LSU alliance, however, will extend well beyond the May 15 AIDS Walk. The two organizations are currently discussing ambitious joint programs in a number of critical areas, including HIV awareness and…
