AFAI’s AIDS Treatment Access Program, the organization’s 14 year-old flagship operation, continues to witness a slowdown in donations of recycled medications. In 2010, donations totaled 6,327 bottles of medicine, worth $4.26 million. This was down from 10,492 bottles worth $7.04 million the previous year. Through the first month of 2011, recycling volume remains on a par with 2010. AFAI is exploring a number of steps to address the shortfall, including increasing the number of drop-off locations in the U.S. and Canada. But, in the meantime, we are putting out an appeal to supporters, for more donations and to help us get the word out on the street. The battle against HIV and AIDS is a long way from over. Please help us get life-saving medicine to the people in desperate need. The following medications are the most urgently needed:   •  Aptivus 250mg   •  Atripla 600/200/300mg   •  Combivir…

The lingering recession continues to wreck the most havoc on the most vulnerable populations. Evidence of this can be found in New York City’s housing courts, which are overrun each day by financially-strapped individuals and families facing eviction from their homes. Among these defendants, the worst hit by the housing crisis are immigrants, who cannot turn to the city’s Human Resource Administration for emergency rental assistance to help them ride out the recession. Responding to their needs, AID FOR AIDS, through its New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) program, last year began an initiative to link these clients to two housing assistance programs—GMHC’s Sustainable Living Fund and the Hispanic AIDS Forum’s Rental Assistance Program (RAP). Already, approximately 100 NYIAL clients have obtained assistance through this initiative, enabling them to improve their quality of life and remain in their homes. The mission of NYIAL’s team includes providing advice and concrete assistance…

AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) is stepping up the fight against HIV and AIDS in Latin America with a significant expansion into Paraguay, via a new partnership with Fundacion Tres. A meeting in New York on February 1 between AFAI officials and Fundacion Tres honorary president Elena Maria Franco identified four major goals for the partnership: • The institution of “Cuanto Sabes?” in Paraguay. The educational program, which currently reaches more than 100,000 adolescents per year in the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama and Venezuela, is aimed at preventing the spread of HIV by developing a culture of responsible and healthy sexuality among youth. • The implementation of the Medical Training program, which during its successful tenure in previous instances has trained nearly 700 Latin American medical professionals in the care and treatment of people with HIV and AIDS. The training is conducted by experienced physicians from the U.S., teamed with…

The “Flamenco fantasia,” which will be in New York for a two-month engagement at the New World Stage 1 theatre, explores a whole new form of storytelling, combining the raw emotion of Flamenco and urban dance, with a powerful percussive beat. “Between Worlds” tells the tale of a future world where water is scarce and desperate tribes go to war with each other over dwindling natural resources. The production is directed by Pablo Croce and choreographed by the international dance pioneer Siudy, who also performs in the show. The cast of 22 dancer/drummers features many of the finest performers from Latin America and other parts of the world.
