Panama Star PANAMA. Volunteers turned out in droves at the Miraflores Locks on Friday, to bring Christmas cheer and excitement to over 300 children and their families, who are part of the Aid for AIDS program operated from the Hospital del Niño in Panama city. Sponsors including the Kirby Simon Trust Foundation, operating via the American Embassy, made sure the kids, many with HIV or aids, had plenty to eat, games, live music, two giant piñatas and the ongoing support and love of the volunteers who included Minori Misawa, wife of the Japanese Ambassador and members of JICA (the Japan International Corporation Agency) which has volunteers on assignment from their home country, working in locations across the country, including the Children’s hospital and the Gorgas Institute. Clínica para la atención de niños con VIH inauguró Primera Dama en Hospital del Niño en Panama

La primera dama de la República, Vivian Fernández de Salud, inauguró el nuevo consultorio de psicología de AID for AIDS, en el Hospital del Niño, el cual brindará atención a los niños, niñas y adolescentes que viven con VIH en el país. El equipamiento y remodelación del consultorio, por un monto aproximado de 7 mil balboas, estuvo a cargo del Fondo de Inversión Social por gestiones de la esposa del Presidente de la República. La representante de AID for AIDS para el área de Latinoamérica, María Cristina Aguais, agradeció a la señora Fernández de Torrijos por el apoyo, y dijo que este consultorio permitirá que los niños, niñas y adolescentes que se atienden en la Caja de Seguro Social, el Hospital del Niño y de otros centros hospitalarios, puedan recibir la atención que requieren en esta clínica. On Monday, December 1st, 2008, AID FOR AIDS International held is My Hero Gala, commemorating World AIDS Day and celebrating individuals making a difference in the fight against the epidemic.  This year’s honorees were photographer Mario Testino, for his work combating stigma and discrimination faced by women and children in developing countries; the SABMiller company, for their unrelenting dedication to the fight against AIDS in the workplace; the law firm of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton LLC, for their commitment to providing pro-bono legal services to charitable and civic organizations; and Argentinean activist Alejandro Pompei, for his leadership and presence within the new generation of youth born with HIV. World AIDS Day was observed on December 1st, with 24 hours set aside across the globe to spread crucial awareness about the devastating pandemic, as well as to remember loved ones who have been affected by the disease. Leading AIDS support organization Aid for AIDS observed the day by hosting their annual My Hero Gala at Gustavino’s last night, to raise money for services helping HIV positive individuals in Latin America and the Caribbean. To commemorate World AIDS Day, New York fashion types like Lazaro Hernandez, Jack McCollough, Richard Chai, Margherita Missoni, and Philip Crangi gathered at Guastavino’s, where Aid for AIDS International was honoring Mario Testino. The night raised $500,000 to support HIV-positive women and children in developing countries, with special attention to Latin America and immigrants in the U.S. “There’s such a big focus on Africa that Latin America gets sideswiped,” said master of ceremonies Fabiola Beracasa, who was making a short New York City pit stop between Thanksgiving in Colombia and Art Basel in Miami. “And I’m Venezuelan, so I’m supporting my roots.” Also enjoying the Latin-themed night was Narciso Rodriguez, a gala co-chair and the recipient of last year’s My Hero award. “Aid for AIDS’ focus on recycling medicine is just so important,” he said. “And it’s great that they’re honoring someone like Mario, who is so generous and committed.”…
