2014 is just around the corner!

A few hours just before New Year, AID FOR AIDS would like to thank every single person like you who made this year a fruitful and stimulating year. Thanks to the hard work of our staff, the support of our partners and allies, and the confidence of everybody, we exceeded our own expectations. It is thanks to you that we can continue our work every day and promote our values. AID FOR AIDS has grown more than we ever could have imagined and this year we started with a new image. The changes that came with the launch of our new image reflects the growth and evolution of AID FOR AIDS as an international organization. These changes also mark an opportunity to clearly present our work and our impact around the world, not only graphically but also more strategically and structurally. As part of the process, we have…

OUR TIME TO CELEBRATE

OUR TIME TO CELEBRATE

During the wintery holiday, at AID FOR AIDS, we reflect on our achievements and accomplishments from the past year. Today, I would like to take a moment to thank every single person like you who, in one way or another, has helped us to make of 2013 such a successful, productive and fulfilling year. Little actions make huge differences, and I am deeply convinced that the only way to change the course of the HIV epidemic is by working together as a big family. In this time of prayer, reflection and joy, words are unable to express how thankful and happy I am with everything we have achieved together. I am so very proud for the amazing number of supporters, partners and allies that we can count on. Every time I see a smile on the face of one of our beneficiaries or I read one letter sent to us…

AID FOR AIDS commemorates World AIDS Day Across its Offices

AID FOR AIDS commemorates World AIDS Day Across its Offices

This December 1st, people gathered around the world for World AIDS Day. Each year, this day is an opportunity for people to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people with HIV, and to remember those whose lives have been lost due to AIDS. AID FOR AIDS commemorated World AIDS Day throughout its offices in Latin America and the Caribbean to raise awareness and bring communities together. Mexico City commemorated World AIDS Day by illuminating 25 monuments with red lighting throughout the city. Important monuments such as the Ángel de la Independencia, and the National Museum shone for everyone throughout the city to see. AID FOR AIDS teamed up with Fundación México Vivo for the lighting of the monuments. Illuminating these monuments is an opportunity for everyone who has been affected by HIV, and everyone who has worked for the advance of treatment of HIV to raise…

AID FOR AIDS and ITPC-Caribbean team up for workshop in the Dominican Republic

AID FOR AIDS and the International Treatment Preparedness Coalition in the Caribbean (ITPC-Caribbean) recently teamed up to organize a workshop titled, “Knowing Antiretroviral Meds,” held in the Dominican Republic during the first week of October. The workshop brought together a variety of well-known activists and leaders in the field of HIV, as well as representatives from different communities around the Caribbean island. Through its advocacy and education programs in the Dominican Republic, AID FOR AIDS has had the opportunity to implement one of its outreach programs, “To Advocate We Must Know.” This program’s main objective is to provide tools to leaders and activists to achieve better results when representing their communities in different areas of decision-making concerning health matters, both at the political and social levels. Ramon Acevedo, one of the participants, took to social media to express his thoughts on the workshop. “I am extremely pleased with the training…

Annual Holiday Card Contest Winners!

Annual Holiday Card Contest Winners!

This year, AID FOR AIDS once again partnered with Parsons the New School for Design to hold a contest in order to find the best possible design for our holiday cards. The contest was a wonderful success and we received almost 100 different design submissions. The winners will be featured on our yearly holiday cards, whose proceeds will be used to support the lifesaving missions of AID FOR AIDS. We want to thank all the students who worked so hard on their designs, as well as Parsons Faculty members Victoria Benatar and Julia Gorton, for leading the project, and Emily Wardwell and Katarzyna Gruda for choosing the winning designs along with the AID FOR AIDS staff. The breadth and creativity of this year’s competing designs were fantastic, so after a great deal of deliberation, five winning designs were chosen to be featured on this year’s Christmas cards. The winning designs…

Mercedes Benz raffle raises funds for AID FOR AIDS in Dominican Republic

Last week, AID FOR AIDS Dominican Republic carried out a raffle of a Mercedes Benz to benefit the work of the organization’s satellite office there. Claudia Messina, President of AFA-Dominican Republic, handed over the automobile to one very lucky winner, Carolina Mejía. Thanks to this raffle, vital funds were raised to help continue the programs of AID FOR AIDS in the Dominican Republic. “We are so happy and proud to say that all funds will help us continue the wonderful work we've been doing for so many years. This will also help us continue reaching thousands of young people through our workshops known as ‘Educating the East Dominican Coast,’” Claudia added enthusiastically. As Claudia stated, all funds raised will help not only to continue with the expansion of our programs, but also to improve the services we provide for the community at large. In the Dominican Republic alone, our HIV…

Testimonial: Francisco is grateful for the chance at a new life in Honduras

Testimonial: Francisco is grateful for the chance at a new life in Honduras

Our tagline at AID FOR AIDS is simple yet powerful: saving lives one by one. That is why since the founding of the organization, we have collected nearly $100 million in donated, unused, HIV medications and sent them to over 15,000 people, including hundreds of children, in 43 countries worldwide. Those of us working behind the scenes in the organization don’t always get the chance to see the impact of our work in the lives of the countless beneficiaries around the world. For this reason, we always feel encouraged with a renewed sense of hope and purpose when we receive heartwarming messages from our beneficiaries such as this one below. Francisco* is a 13-year-old boy from Honduras who was born with HIV. Due to the help he has received from Montaña de Luz, a home for children affected by HIV and AIDS, and the collaboration between AID FOR AIDS and…

Women and AIDS around the world

Women and AIDS around the world

Since the time of the first diagnosis in 1981, there have been over 30 million lives lost to the AIDS epidemic. Whereas stigma and discrimination once led people to believe mistakenly that this was a “gay disease,” recent statistics reveal that women account for over half of HIV infections worldwide. Furthermore, research shows that the vast majority of HIV infections for women are transmitted through heterosexual intercourse. Keeping that in mind, we would like to take this opportunity to share an infographic about women and AIDS designed by our friend, Dalene Joubert, over at HealthforHer. In this infographic, Dalene correctly points out that women are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS around the world. She also highlights some of the unique challenges faced by women and girls, including cultural expectations and gender inequality. “Image and perception have a lot of influence over how people engage in society. We live in…
