The past year was a momentous one for AID FOR AIDS, in many ways. It represented our 15th year of existence – a miracle in itself – and saw us reach the $80 million mark in total shipments of recycled medication to the developing world. In 2011, we celebrated our 10th annual My Hero Gala, which was our most successful and enjoyable Gala to date. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Graciela Dauhajre, Graciela Hank, Professor William A. Haseltine, Maria Jose Hidalgo and Laura Messina Pilson as our new Board Members. This year was marked by our increased emphasis on strategic partnerships. In 2011, we reached out to other organizations in a much more concerted and far-reaching manner, with the goals of raising awareness of our many programs, increasing our funding base and the amount of recycled life-saving medication, and serving a more diverse population of people with HIV…

A Time To Reflect And Rejoice

A Time To Reflect And Rejoice

We at AID FOR AIDS, by necessity, approach our mission from a middle ground somewhere between celebration and somber reflection.  While we reflect on the tragedy of HIV and AIDS and the awesome challenges we face in combating it, we celebrate the fundamental human capacity for goodness, and the courage and will to make the world right against all odds. Both ends of that spectrum are intensified during the holiday season, as we look back on everything that has happened over the past year and begin planning for a better year ahead.  But, on this occasion, as I address all of you who have done so much to keep AID FOR AIDS surviving and thriving for the past 15 years, I can’t help but lean strongly toward celebration. I refer specifically to our unlikely journey from a fly-by-night charity to the largest medication recycling organization in the world; to our…

The Party’s Over…But Not The Memories

The Party’s Over…But Not The Memories

The holiday season arrived with a flourish at the AID FOR AIDS offices last Tuesday, as our headquarters staff hosted a party for more than 50 clients of the New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) program, as well as their friends and families. By all accounts, the 2011 AFAI Holiday Party was a bash. “The office was packed with people and everybody was having fun,” said NYIAL case manager David Mosquera. “We’ve had some really good parties in past years, but this one, I believe, was the best yet.” Among the many highlights were a D.J. who kept the action going on the dance floor; goodie bags for every adult attendee and toys for the children; the raffling off of prizes (gift bags of beauty products, candies, etc.); trays of delicious meats and cheeses, and even a faux Christmas tree. Two clients used the opportunity to showcase their talents in…

“The experience is unforgettable…each time I find myself facing a new group, I am proud.”  Daniel Chavarria,  age 18. More than 50 graduates of AID FOR AIDS’  “Cuanto Sabes?”  adolescent HIV preventive education program met in Panama in late November to share their experiences in bringing HIV awareness to their peers across the country. These young peer educators, or “multiplying agents,” are among the nearly 400 Panamanian adolescents trained by the office of AID FOR AIDS Panama in “Cuanto Sabes?”, since the program’s first implementation in Panama back in 2006. Over that period, they have managed to replicate the HIV prevention message among tens of thousands of adolescents in schools and community organizations. Support for their activities has come from international organizations and national governmental bodies, including UNESCO, the Office of the Panamanian First Lady and the Ministry of Social Development. Discussion at the November conference focused on both the…

AID FOR AIDS International’s New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL) program has launched a major effort to provide services to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender youth in New York City’s five boroughs. Via a partnership with the Queens Lesbian & Gay Community Center Inc. (dba Queens Pride House), NYIAL plans to offer a wide variety of services to LGBT youth who have tested positive for HIV, or who are sexually active and at risk of infection.  The specific services provided by NYIAL under the new partnership will include community outreach; HIV testing and counseling; case management for newly diagnosed clients (hospital escorts, immigration counseling, translation services, etc.), and referrals to Queens Pride House for HIV preventive education and psycho-social support. QPH, in addition to providing HIV peer education and psycho-support groups, will offer appropriate space for HIV testing and counseling, and overall coordination of all LGBT youth program activities. “Although…

AFAI Calls For A Renewed Global Commitment On World Aids Day.

AFAI Calls For A Renewed Global Commitment On World Aids Day.

Today, December 1st, World AIDS Day, we want to take a moment to reflect, remember, and renew our collective commitment to the fight against the HIV epidemic. Today is also an occasion to recognize each and every person who has become involved in this effort over the past 30 years.  We need to honor those we have lost in this long battle, many of whom fought for the lives and rights of others and lost theirs in this epidemic. On this day we must renew our commitment as a true global community of compassion and care. We must never waver from the fight against HIV and AIDS. We must continue supporting those whose lives are affected by HIV. We must recognize the great challenges that remain ahead. There are currently over 34 million people living with HIV around the world and 7.6 millions still lack access to treatment. More than…

Beyond Hiv:  Who Are You?

Beyond Hiv:  Who Are You?

Recently, a group of men gathered at AID FOR AIDS headquarters to explore, and express, their individual identities. The forum for this self-examination was a handicraft workshop sponsored by AFAI’s New York Immigrant AIDS Link (NYIAL).  The workshop participants were asked to create collages of photos or other images that answered the eternal question, “Who am I?” “It was very instructive,” said NYIAL case manager Jonathan Capote, who led the workshop along with outreach coordinator David Mosquera. “We laid out a huge amount of magazines, newspapers and other printed materials in our conference room and challenged the clients to come up with something that truly defined their personalities. It was great watching them put the pieces of their lives together on paper.” The act of creation, however, was just the first part of the exercise. Once they had completed their collages, the clients were asked to present them to the…
