Last week, AID FOR AIDS International and the Coalition for Haiti, including Housing Works, Diaspora, Caribbean Women’s Health Association, and PHAP+, received a large donation of medical supplies from the Ambulatory Surgical Center of Union County for use in Haiti. Though AFAI has not yet been able to receive the full shipment, but it is estimated to be 1 million dollars worth of medicine and medical supplies. As AFAI prepares its fourth shipment of medicines to be sent to Haiti, we are very excited about the new donation and the potential it has for saving lives in Haiti. More medicine is still urgently needed and AFAI would like to encourage all of our contacts to donate any unexpired ARV, Antibiotic, or Prophylaxis medication that they can. Be a Hero—your unused medications can save lives in Haiti!

In a White House blog post marking World AIDS Day, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby writes about the recent decision to hold the 2012 International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C. “By 2012, the U.S. will have a National HIV/AIDS Strategy in place for the first time in our nation’s history. … In addition, the conference will allow us to spotlight our ongoing and continued commitment to [PEPFAR] and the President’s Global Health Initiative,” he writes (11/30).
Blog: Ideology Has No Place In HIV/AIDS Fight
“Although huge strides have been made over the past two decades, we are, in many respects, continuing to lose ground as new infections outpace our ability to deliver treatment,” Josh Ruxin, a public health expert, writes in a Huffington Post blog post reflecting on the fight against HIV/AIDS worldwide. He makes some recommendations for the incoming USAID administrator, including funding for condoms. “Ideology can’t have a place in lifesaving programs on any scale,” Ruxin writes (11/27).

December 1, 2009 (New York, NY): In honor of World AIDS Day and in commemoration of those individuals persevering in the fight against the epidemic worldwide, AID FOR AIDS International hosted its 9th annual My Hero Gala at the Puck Building in New York City. Each year, the My Hero Gala celebrates the courage to make a difference, this year focusing on the theme of “Life Delivery”. AID FOR AIDS International (AFAI) works every day to deliver life to individuals living with HIV and AIDS in developing countries: delivering life in the form of medication, education, social services, empowerment, and training.

AID FOR AIDS International ensured that Carlitos, a Bolivian child suffering from Hunter’s Syndrome, received the necessary medicine to save his life. In May 2008, Carlitos was diagnosed with Hunter’s Syndrome, a life-threatening disease with limited means for treatment. Currently, there is only one medication available on the market to treat this disease, and it has a price tag of about $22,000 per month.
Thanks to AFAI’s involvement in this case, Carlitos, along with seven other children, has started receiving the treatment he needs to save his life.

On August 5th, 2009 AID FOR AIDS International presented at the Youth Assembly of the United Nations. Executive Director and Founder, Jesus Aguais spoke about AFAI’s innovative “Cuanto Sabes de VIH y SIDA?” (“How much do you know about HIV and AIDS?”) peer education program. He spoke about the importance of Neurolinguistic programming, which changes how youth feel about HIV and AIDS by dissecting the way that society uses language to define it, in the fight against HIV and AIDS, especially regarding stigma and discrimination. Mr. Aguais was joined by a graduate and peer educator for the “Cuanto Sabes” program, 21 year old Moises Gonzalez. Moises spoke freely about how “Cuanto Sabes” has changed his life and how it has helped him to educate others. Youth Assembly attendees asked questions after the talk, ranging from how AFAI was started to personal experiences with people living with HIV and AIDS.
